Sail To Prevail creates opportunities for disabled children and adults to overcome adversity through therapeutic sailing.
Sail To Prevail is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in 1982 that has helped over 10,000 individuals with disabilities. Originally called Shake-A-Leg Newport, we rebranded the name to Sail To Prevail in 2010, but the mission remains unchanged.
Operating in several states, Sail To Prevail teaches over 1,500 people with disability the skills of sailing in our fleet of specially adapted sailboats each year. The Sail To Prevail fleet includes five 20-foot “Freedom” sailboats, 23-foot “Sonars,” a “Martin 16,” and most unique, “EASTERNER” a 66-foot, handicap-accessible, America’s Cup racing boat – the only one of its kind. Our programs strongly encourage disabled individuals to be active participants, steering the boat as well as opportunities to grind winches and trim sails. The measurable outcomes demonstrate self-confidence, leadership and teamwork. First time and experienced sailors are welcome at Sail To Prevail. Our program is available to all people with disabilities and has programs designed to meet specific needs.
